"In 1998 Steve was
living in Sidmouth, Devon. Inspired by his friends at the University of
Luton he bought
an Apple Mac computer and a piece of software called Rebirth, a kind of
dance music tool based on the
Roland TR-808 drum machine. Lacking a music sequencer and a keyboard,
Steve used Rebirth with an
application called SoundEdit16, which was meant for the manipulation of
audio files, but which he used
to create music. With his portable DAT recorder it was possible for Steve
to record digital quality music
with Rebirth (played live, like a real instrument), then import the sound
files back into SoundEdit16.
Additional audio files - samples, recordings of earlier Mooch albums,
keyboard sounds, etc - could be
mixed over the basic track, one by one, in an additive process. This meant
tracks had to be mixed as
they were created, and once saved there was no going back, but Steve
managed to use the technique
to cosmic effect.
Following a request by a local music-promoting group (the Future Sound Of
Exeter) to create some
psychedelic dance music, Steve recorded six tracks, which he performed
live at a venue off Gandy
Street, Exeter, for a benefit event supporting the Free Tibet campaign.
Thus Me Human, You Alien
was born. The album was never released however, since In Search Of The
Acid Metal Grille had just
been released by Andy Garibaldi at Dead Earnest Records.
In this edition of the album, the six tracks have been mixed into a sonic
whole, following the original
concept and the live performance.
Steve had been using the Mac/Rebirth/DAT technique for a year or two
before moving to Devon, working
with Garry Lewin and Phil Watson. But he also worked with Pete Wyer at
this time, recording material
from Mac to DAT then augmenting it with Pete’s help. The two sequenced
tracks on In Search Of The
Acid Metal Grille were created in this way. But on Eight Symbols For
Floating With, Steve wanted to
explore a more ambient sound. Recording seven five-minute sound sculptures
created from pure Mac
waveforms, he made the foundation of the album; later on, at Pete’s
Cheltenham studio, the two
musicians overdubbed keyboards to create the final album. An eighth track
was also recorded, using
Pete’s Cubase set-up and featuring a more structured approach.
Eight Symbols For Floating With was performed live on one occasion, when
Steve was asked by the
Future Sound Of Exeter to play it in an art gallery off Fore Street as
part of a multimedia event…"
